Tadalafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence; inability to get or keep an erection) in men. Tadalafil is in a class of medicines informed phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This increased blood flow can cause an erection. Tadalafil does not cure erectile dysfunction or increase sexual desire. Tadalafil does not prevent pregnancy or the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Tadalafil comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It might be taken with or without food.
In December 2003, the Food and Drug Administration approved tadalafil (as Tadalafil) for sale in the United States as the third ED prescription drug pill (after sildenafil (Viagra) and vardenafil (Levitra)). Tadalafil’s 36-hour effectiveness earned it the nickname, “The Weekend Pill”; like sildenafil and vardenafil, tadalafil is recommended as an ‘as needed’ medication. Tadalafil is the only one of the three that is also offered as a once-daily medication.
You might tell your MD what herbal products you are taking, especially St. John’s wort and you might tell your MD if you smoke and if you have ever had an erection that lasted more than 4 hours. Also tell your MD if you have or have ever had a condition that affects the shape of the penis, such as angulation, cavernosal fibrosis, or Peyronie’s disease; diabetes; high cholesterol; high or low blood pressure; irregular heartbeat; a heart attack; angina (chest pain); a stroke; ulcers in the stomach or intestine; a bleeding disorder; blood cell issues such as sickle cell anemia (a disease of the red blood cells), multiple myeloma (cancer of the plasma cells), or leukemia (cancer of the white blood cells); and liver, kidney, or heart disease.
Tadalafil might cause side effects. You might experience headache, indigestion or heartburn, diarrhea, flushing, pain in the stomach, back, muscles, or any limb or a cough. Tell your MD if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away.If you experience a sudden severe loss of vision, blurred vision, changes in color vision, sudden decrease or loss of hearing, ringing in ears, erection that lasts longer than 4 hours, dizziness, chest pain, hives or a rash you might inform your MD immediately. Tadalafil 2.5mg or 5mg pills might be taken once a day. Such once a day use of Tadalafil is suitable for patients who anticipate frequent use of Tadalafil, Levitra or Viagra (at least twice a week) who have had a good response to Tadalafil, Levitra or Viagra when used “as required”. It is normal to start once a day treatment with Tadalafil with the 5mg dose. The 2.5mg dose might be used if you experience unacceptable side effects. Take one tablet a day at approximately the same time of day. You might find it helpful to make taking your tablet a part of your daily routine, for example when you brush your teeth. It might take up to 5 days prior to the full effect of the treatment is experienced, as the levels in your body build up over time. After 5 days the levels have built up to a point where you can respond naturally whenever you are sexually stimulated. Your treatment can be taken with or without food.
